NAAD stands for Network for Action Against Domestic Abuse.
Domestic abuse is a serious problem in India. Here are some statistics that shed light on the prevalence of domestic abuse in the country:
- According to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), there were more than 4 lakh cases of crimes against women reported in 2019. Of these, more than 30% were cases of cruelty by husband or his relatives.
- The National Family Health Survey (NFHS-4) conducted in 2015-2016 found that 31% of ever-married women in India have experienced physical, sexual, or emotional violence by their spouse.
- A study conducted by the International Journal of Science and Research in 2019 found that 60% of women who participated in the study reported experiencing some form of domestic violence.
- The lockdown imposed due to the COVID-19 pandemic led to a surge in domestic violence cases in India. According to the National Commission for Women (NCW), the number of domestic violence complaints received by them increased by 2.5 times during the lockdown period.
These statistics highlight the urgent need to address the issue of domestic abuse in India and provide support and resources for survivors.
NAAD was born out of a need to address this pervasive issue, and raise awareness about it. One of the biggest problems faced by victims is the lack of empathy and awareness amongst their friends and family. It is an uncomfortable truth of society, which most people fail to even acknowledge.
We hope to bring the spotlight on an issue which most people find convenient to brush aside.
